What's in a name? When it comes to 'Ubuntu', a whole lot. Ubuntu means "humanity to others" in some African cultures, but it's also the name of an computer operating system that is bringing people together, as well as a larger movement to change the way people interact with technology.


In this episode, we speak with members of an Ubuntu 'LoCo' (for Local Community) group in Washington, DC. While their mission is to promote Ubuntu Linux and open source software, their story likewise illustrates how a simple piece of software can build community. We also explore the history of Ubuntu, what it does, how open source is changing technological development-- and why some people want to stop it.

A year later, sales of Linux on Dell computers continue to grow PDF Print E-mail

April 14, 2008 (Computerworld) As Dell Inc. approaches its one-year anniversary of selling laptop and desktop computers preloaded with Ubuntu Linux, the company is continuing to expand the fledgling program to new computer models and markets.

In interviews at Dell's Parmer campus north of Austin last week, four Dell representatives said sales of the Linux-loaded machines are encouraging.

Though they declined to give sales figures for the Linux-equipped machines, the Dell officials were adamant in saying that the program wouldn't be continuing or adding new models if the sales figures were not adequate.

Shuttleworth starts countdown to Ubuntu 8.04 release PDF Print E-mail

Shuttleworth says that "all the major server vendors -- IBM, Dell, Sun, Hewlett-Packard -- are now supporting Ubuntu with engineering. It's delivering great out-of-box server performance."

What Canonical gets out of this focus on the server, as opposed to the desktop, is that "70% of our business comes from server support. So, the state of adoption for server is very significant for Canonical." At the same time, "Customers and ISVs (independent software vendors) are asking for Ubuntu server software."
